By Dawn’s Early Light is a 1990 TV movie that seems to have vanished from existence since being shown once years ago, but it’s now easier to prove its existence as it’s out on budget R2 DVD.
Powers Boothe stars as a bomber pilot who is lucky enough to be having an affair with co-pilot Rebecca De Mornay, but unlucky enough to be in the air when World War III kicks off. There’s a lot of agonising over which orders are genuine, whether they should bomb Moscow and it’s still a fairly nerve-wracking story, if a bit dated; it also gives a good insight into US air force protocol.
It’s nicely directed by Jack Sholder, and there’s a great supporting cast for a TV movie, including James Earl Jones, Martin Landau, Glenn Morshower and the late Darren McGavin. Not to be confused with the Columbo episode of the same name, or indeed with a sentimental TV movie with the same name.
