Another milestone in the year of the zombie was the release of a remake of Dawn of the Dead, now available as either the cinema release or a longer director’s cut, which mystifyingly has less extra features on the disk.
While I’d love to dump all copies of this movie in a burning pit at the edge of town, I have to admit that it’s actually an entertaining and lively update on the classic. The subtext has almost all gone, making the mall setting a bit redundant, and the lifecycle of the virus seems to have been sloppily thought through, but it’s as good as anyone could have expected from the writer of Scooby Doo.
The cast play it straight, the action scenes are well choreographed and the cameos and nods to the original are worked in well.
