Get Carter

Another long-awaited DVD was Get Carter (I don’t remember it getting a UK cinema release yet, so the R2 release will be a way off).

This is a remake of the 1973 Michael Caine story, where he played a Geordie and got to push Alf Roberts off a car park roof. He also plays a part in this new version, opposite Stallone in the title role. The story is transplanted to America and accordingly picks up a cinematic sheen that the original didn’t have, along with various scenes edited like music videos. There are enough plot differences from the original to make it interesting, but there’s still the uneasy combination of moral outrage and sleaziness that scuppers the entire story.

The disc is anamorphic 2.35:1 with an excellent DD5.1 soundtrack, and has deleted scenes and a director’s commentary which don’t add much.

Mild Peril Rating: ★½☆☆☆
