The other big blockbuster of 2003, Hulk, is also out all over the world on DVD. This was a lot more ambitious than T3, but unfortunately misses the target quite a bit as a result. The strange thing about this, given that it’s directed by art-house favourite Ang Lee, is that the comic-book elements work well and the more intimate dramatic scenes are horribly stagey. The editing is great (not sure that’s a viable poster quote), and the CGI effects are effective in a cartoonish way. However every scene with Nick Nolte is a catastrophe of bellowing and annoying tics.
The pacing is all over the place too, and I found myself reflecting on minor details, like that Jennifer Connelly’s nose is a lot straighter than it used to be. The disk is about the same high standard as the T3 disk, with a commentary by Lee, lots of short FX pieces, and a deleted scene which goes some way to making the plot more coherent.
