I Robot is Alex Proyas’ very loose adaptation of the old Asimov story. Or at least an adaptation of a few paragraphs Asimov once wrote.
Will Smith stars as Del Spooner, who you might expect to drive a yellow Reliant Robin with that name, but instead he concentrates on pointing the Audi symbol on his car towards the camera as often as possible. While doing this he’s caught up in a fairly standard plot about a new generation of robots who can’t be trusted. You get the expected high production values and Smith wisecracks, and an appalling amount of product placement.
What sets it apart is Proyas’ striking and ambitious visual sense and ability to set a strong mood with the daftest of content (as demonstrated in his previous movies The Crow and Dark City). You also get good support from an excellent cast, and the DVD is well-presented with a nice DTS track. It can be bought as 1 disk with some nice features or a 2-disk set for completists.
