Now here’s a real surprise. Levity, which you won’t have heard of despite its great cast, is the directorial debut of Ed Solomon, best known as the co-creator of crazy comedies like the Men in Black and Bill and Ted movies (and now you know why the bad guy in B&T’s Bogus Journey was called ‘De Nomolos’).
Although I loved most of Solomon’s movies to date, I’m pleased to say that this is a laugh-free tale of inner-city crime and redemption, with Billy Bob Thornton released from prison and trying to make amends for his past. Thornton is great as (almost) always, Morgan Freeman is in the cast as always, and there are also fine performances from Holly Hunter and Kirsten Dunst.
It’s slow and miserable (the title is ironic) but very moving and convincing. Solomon does a thoughtful commentary track on the DVD and it will be interesting to see where he goes from here.
Mild Peril Rating:

- @lucyemmabaker @luke_hollis as for personality, I want levity not deep and meaningful. Sunday's are my brains day off.
(about 12 minutes ago) - 'I like levity, I like brevity' 'what about gravity? Where do you stand on that?' 'Firmly... On terra firma'
(about 19 minutes ago) - @richarddeitsch Liked the Iran-Israel question, etc, but so much for levity on Super Bowl Sunday. geez.
(about 25 minutes ago) - Not enough Roger Lloyd-Pack in #tinkertailor; it lacked levity. Next time make 'Trigger Tailor Soldier Spy'
(about 40 minutes ago) - #ndpdb8 @steph paquette brings levity to the proceedings. Q: why should I have a beer with you?
