Twister

At the cinema Twister was impressive in parts, mainly due to images of destruction and a very loud soundtrack. Video for once does us a service by exposing it for what it is. While De Bont’s previous effort Speed was also ludicrous, it was well thought out until the last few minutes, and had a villain as a focus for the conflict. In a bid to manufacture some drama, Twister gives us a divorced couple, some ‘wacky’ heroes and two rival teams of meteorologists, as if we care.

Worst of all, it wastes the talents of the great Bill Paxton in what could have been a breakthrough role. Don’t waste your time. Lots of wind, both literally and metaphorically. Flying things: 2 jeeps, three combine harvesters, 1 oil tanker, 1 kids bike, 1 house and 2 cows. Or rather the same cow twice. Most importantly, patchy script and a very stupid story.

Mild Peril Rating: ★★½☆☆
