Another brand new US release is Way of the Gun, which is the directorial debut of Chris McQuarrie, who won an Oscar for his screenplay for The Usual Suspects.
It’s a mix of hostage thriller and Peckinpah western, and manages to be impressive without ever really knitting together. Some scenes are as brilliant as you might expect, and others seem to have wandered in from another movie, making the whole thing about 30 minutes too long. Benicio Del Toro turns in another great performance, but Ryan Philippe is far too young as his partner-in-crime.
The disc is well-made and has an interesting commentary from McQuarrie. Be warned that it’s very violent and quite tasteless in parts.
